Across the Table from Terri Callaway: A Q&A with our newest Associate Principal

In the words of Baskervill President Bob Clark, Terri Callaway, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, has shown “a tremendous dedication to Baskervill through her work with hospitality clients.” What impresses us about Terri is not only her commitment to clients, but also her lifelong passion for design.

After working all over the country with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, she took a 15-year leave from the field to raise four kids—all while maintaining her license, doing freelance work, and staying on top of industry changes. Not long after her swift transition back into the design world, Terri joined Baskervill, and her expertise has been making our firm better for the past decade. Congratulations to Terri on this well-deserved promotion!

You’ve been an architect for over 30 years now. Is this something you always wanted to do?
I started taking mechanical drawing classes in tenth grade. I was hooked; I decided then that I wanted to be an architect. When I started school at Virginia Tech, I knew right away that this was the career for me. I loved it!

This job requires a lot of juggling—how many states are you doing projects in right now?
Right around fifteen. When it comes to staying organized, I try to write everything down, but a lot of it is just in my head. Keeping up with details comes naturally to me.

What’s one of your favorite things about the job?
Construction administration. To me, that’s the most important stage of a project, and I think owners appreciate when the architect takes the time to make sure that everything is going according to plan and the general contractor is staying true to the design.

What does being an associate principal mean to you?
I’m really excited about this position and happy to be a part of the Baskervill leadership. It means a lot to me to have the opportunity to teach our younger team members about good leadership skills and to help them develop the confidence that it takes to produce good projects. No matter what I’m working on, I make an effort to develop close relationships with clients and pay special attention to their needs. I encourage the designers on my team to do the same.
