Baskervill collaborated with design partner Goody Clancy to assist in the interior design, roofing, and construction phases of the William & Mary Integrated Science Center 4. Spanning 124,000 square feet of new construction and 10,000 square feet of strategic renovation, the future-focused facility acts as a multidisciplinary linchpin.
Home to the College’s first new school in over 50 years—the School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics—the building is programmed around breaking down traditional STEM silos and fostering spontaneous collisions of collaboration, where a machine learning specialist and a bioengineer might cross paths in a shared space and spark a new research idea.
The building features numerous small and medium-sized classrooms, a large interactive classroom, a 150-seat lecture hall, multiple collaboration pockets, and over 30 instructional and research labs. By utilizing glass-front display labs, the design makes innovation highly visible—putting William & Mary’s strategic leap into data-driven research on full display while also acting as a recruiting tool for prospective students.
The ground floor features an 8,000 square foot makerspace with specialized zones for hard and soft fabrication. The makerspace spills onto a dedicated “maker patio” and extends into the courtyard. “The Hub” is the central spine that connects all four floors and pulls people, ideas, and energy into alignment.
