The Admissions Building at Virginia State University will transform a first impression into a tangible experience, becoming a physical embodiment of what the university represents and the experience it promises to future students. As the first and lasting impression for prospective students and families, it sets the tone for a journey rooted in strength, inclusivity, and academic excellence. With this mission in mind, VSU partnered with Baskervill and Goody Clancy to craft this all-important gateway for connection, innovation, and tradition.
The design of the 30,000-square-foot home base balances bold architecture with thoughtful functionality. Expansive glass facades project the university’s commitment to transparency and openness, while open spaces for student, alumni, and faculty gatherings support connectivity. The design programmatically splits the building into two wings with shared meeting spaces and staff rooms. The wings are connected by a central lobby and a ceremonial pathway for special events and game-days, fostering a sense of community and tradition. Throughout, sustainable materials and efficient systems will support the building’s longevity, making it as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing.
