The Richmond Volleyball Club turned to Baskervill to facilitate the design of a new 50,000-SF indoor facility within a tight timeline. Nearly 400 people participate in the club’s daily adult leagues and junior development programs. While the club’s high-profile tournaments, such as the Boys’ East Coast Championships and the Girls’ South Atlantic Championships, draw out-of-state players and their families to the Richmond region year-round. Our team worked closely with Chesterfield County, the club and its selected contractor to move the project through design and approvals quickly, phasing packages to allow site work to get underway wile more detailed elements of the design were fleshed out and finalized.
The overall building area and height are customized to NCAA guidelines, with oversized viewing areas to wow the club’s 3,000+ members and numerous tournament visitors. Instead of viewing stands, the facility opts to immerse spectators in matches via closer court connections. A wide-open mezzanine with an exterior balcony is fit for picnic-style viewing while teams warm up and get introduced. About 5,000-SF will be used for community programs and other fitness classes.
The eight-court facility’s lively undulated façade mixes brick with multi-colored metal panels at various heights to help bring a sense of balance and approachable scale to the otherwise boxy structure. Massive back-lit panels with hanging banners visually showcase club news and recent and upcoming events, while bright blue eyebrow canopies and matching wall sconces set a vibrant, electric tone at the point of arrival.
