Rooted in deep community engagement, the Lucks Field Community Center reflects the voices of the neighborhood in a design that uplifts in both spirit and form. Inside, spaces for play, learning, and gathering unfold across three stories, culminating in a rooftop basketball court and community garden with sweeping views of the city skyline. For many local kids who may be unfamiliar with downtown Richmond, the universally accessible rooftop reveals a new horizon where play meets possibility.
Beneath the rooftop court in the clouds, the center unfolds in four distinct volumes—each layered, clad, scaled, and programmed to reflect a different facet of neighborhood life. The two-story gymnasium, wrapped in translucent panels with asymmetrical windows, glows with activity from every angle. To the north, a brick volume scaled to match the neighborhood’s pedestrian rhythm houses a miniature ‘city hall.’ The main entrance, marked by rich blue siding and a cantilevered canopy, faces the historic baseball field that gave the center its name—linking past and present. Surrounding it all, green space, outdoor courts, and a shaded playground stitch the building into the fabric of daily life.
Compact in footprint but expansive in vision, the LEED Silver–aligned center champions connection, movement, and sustainability. Above all, it mirrors the community itself—born from collective voices, built for everyday use, and designed to spark the imagination of future generations.
