A community-centric hospital deserves a community-centric approach. That’s why Baskervill collaborated with Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital to revitalize its exterior to better aid its underserved locale. The project focused on updating and renovating the building’s façade while addressing a key pain point: a lack of clear differentiation between the main entrance and the Emergency Department, leading to visitors frequently using the wrong entrance and causing delays in care. The design solution strategically enhanced the exterior with subtle architectural build-outs, integrating bold colors and prominent signage to create a clear, intuitive pathway for visitors—whether for routine appointments or emergency services. This transformation not only improves wayfinding but also elevates the overall experience, ensuring that the hospital’s exterior reflects its commitment to care and accessibility.
Underneath a shade-providing pergola located along the courtyard that connects the hospital to the surrounding medical campus, a mural by prolific Richmond muralist Hamilton Glass celebrates local and significant historical figures in the history of Richmond’s first black founded and owned hospital. The reinvigorated palette creates a more harmonious campus while incorporating community-driven storytelling, connecting the hospital to its roots and the people it serves.
