Adventure, community, and comfort collide within Väsen Brewing Company’s 17,000-SF tasting room and brewery, which weaves a storied tale and pays homage to the Scandinavian roots of its founders. Located in a 1940s Art Deco glass factory in Richmond’s bustling Scott’s Addition neighborhood, Väsen partnered with Baskervill designers to capture the historic building’s industrial heritage and marry it with the brewery’s mission: to connect people to the great outdoors. The founders’ own Laplander heritage informed many of the project’s details; rustic natural materials bring warmth to the contemporary concrete floors, crisp white walls, and colorful graphic mural. An indoor rockscape, communal-style seating, and a massive digital projector for special events and screenings further encourages daring drinkers to put away their tech and instead connect with each other and themselves—a fitting tribute to the brewery’s bold moniker, väsen, which translates to “one’s inner essence or way of being.”
