Richmond’s TB Smith Community Center is envisioned as a hub for ideas. With programmatic spaces designed to empower and educate residents, the building is intended as an extension of the city itself, and a gateway to community services. The front façade alludes to a silhouette of homes, a nod to the surrounding neighborhood, while inviting plazas adorned with gardens act as a shared front porch. Responding to neighborhood engagement sessions, the Center’s basketball court is purposefully placed in the highly visible ‘front yard’, capturing attention from the street and prioritizing that space as central to the community. The importance of staying active is present throughout the center with basketball courts, multipurpose sports fields, indoor walking track, extensive nature trails, and a kid-friendly splash park.
