For over 100 years, the Miller & Rhoads Department Store brought development and flair to Richmond, altering the city’s landscape and reputation. Nestled on the department store’s second floor, Sara Sue – the most respected milliner in all of Richmond – designed and fabricated custom hats for discerning buyers for over 40 years. Known for being colorful, theatrical, and one-of-a-kind, her work was a sought-after symbol of uniqueness and individuality. Her annual fashion shows in the store’s Tea Room were a hot ticket – a gathering of shared passion for her exquisite creations.
Today, the iconic Miller & Rhoads building is home to Hilton Richmond Downtown and, within, Gather & Hem. Keeping with the tradition of bringing people together, Gather & Hem greets guests in a tailored but comfortable ambiance. Colorful, playful details juxtapose linear forms and the established, classical architecture. Supple materials and nuanced nods to the hotel’s hat-loving heritage punctuate the space. Sara Sue would approve.
