Envisaged as a place of contemplation and inspiration, the National Slavery Museum was conceptualized as an anchor connecting the Richmond Slave Trail to the slavery burial grounds and historic sites of Shockoe Bottom. Visitors connect to this monumentally important chapter of Richmond’s history through The Pavilion at Lumpkin’s Jail, a 12,000-SF visitor’s center, which would protect the archaeological site, and The 60,000-SF Museum, housing four stories of cultural, research, and educational space.
