From bold moves to big wins, 2024 was one for the books at Baskervill. Our 127th year in operation found us expanding, innovating, and collaborating like never before. Here’s a look at the defining moments of our year.
People
2024 was an exciting year for growth as we welcomed back Anca Lipan, AIA, LEED AP BD+C to lead our newly independent Civic Studio, marking a significant expansion for our public sector work. The formalization of a dedicated Cultural Studio led by Burt Pinnock, FAIA, NOMA reflects Baskervill’s continued commitment to investing in areas that honor culture.
We also welcomed Edward Darr as Chief Financial Officer, bringing sharp financial acumen to our C-suite. Our leadership team also welcomed two new design voices in Jessica Zullo, IIDA, NCIDQ and John Lang, AIA both charged with elevating the design and reach of our portfolios. Elevations within the firm further showcased our depth of talent, with 3 new principals and 9 new associates joining the ranks.
Sheena Mayfield, AIA, Mixed-use & Multifamily Studio Director, received well-deserved recognition with AIA Virginia’s Emerging Architect Award, celebrating her innovative contributions to the field and her community.
Meanwhile, our Gdańsk team settled into their brand-new office space, and we cheered to a key milestone in Charlotte: our first full year of creating meaningful connections and designs in the Queen City. Plus, our Orlando office proved what we’ve always known—it’s one of the Best Places to Work!
Last but certainly not least, a talented cohort of summer interns rounded out the summer, infusing our studios with creative energy and promising the next wave of design leaders is already on its way.
Projects
We celebrated more Baskervill project milestones than ever before. Some highlights include:
Our Hospitality Studio had a banner year, kicking off with the much-anticipated opening of the renovated Alfond Inn, now officially named Orlando’s Best Boutique Hotel by Orlando Weekly Readers’ Choice. Following last year’s collaboration with concrete on citizenM Austin, we also celebrated the debut of citizenM Menlo Park, adding another bold, future-focused property to our hospitality portfolio.
The Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront made waves, collecting a haul of accolades, including design awards from ASID Virginia & IIDA Virginia/West Virginia, HRACRE, and AIA Orlando as well as being named a Gold Key Award Finalist for Excellence in Hospitality Design from Boutique Design Magazine. The hospitality team capped off the year with a show-stopping presence at BDNY, unveiling Salone, a jaw-dropping Italian Renaissance-inspired booth complete with an unforgettable 1,100-pound chandelier.
In our Cultural Studio, The Shockoe Project earned local and national acclaim for its community-first vision, including the 2024 Phil Freelon Professional Design Award from the National Organization of Minority Architects, a Merit Award from AIA Richmond, and a Design Award Citation from AIA Virginia.
Meanwhile, Liberty University’s Reber-Thomas Dining Center was recognized with four national awards, and our Workplace Studio unveiled the new Genworth headquarters, a space designed with employee wellness at its heart. And speaking of wellness, our Healthcare Studio celebrated a major milestone with the completion of the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital campus, reinforcing our dedication to creating meaningful impact in our communities.
Monumental Moments
Beyond projects, our firm generated an astounding amount of buzz this year. We landed a coveted spot on the 2024 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies—a testament to our upward momentum—and NEWH once again named us a TopID firm, solidifying our position as leaders in the national hospitality scene.
A standout achievement was cracking the top ten of Interior Design’s 2024 Hospitality Giants list—a milestone that reflects decades of incredible dedication in our Hospitality Studio. We also climbed the ranks on several prestigious industry lists, including placing #4 on Hotel Business’ Architects & Designers Survey, #43 on Building Design + Construction’s Top 100 Architecture Engineering Firms list, #187 on Architectural Record’s Top 300 Survey, and #427 on ENR’s Top Design Firms list.
