What was once an unused retail store is now an open and serene dialysis center that encourages connection and offers patients a sense of belonging and community. Located in the historically under-served town of Farmville, the 11,500-sf dialysis center can treat up to 22 patients at the same time. In addition to a complete interior renovation of the big-box retail space, which was designed and constructed on a six-month expedited schedule, the roof was replaced and improvements were made to the building’s exterior walls. One of the greatest design challenges was emulating natural light in a space without windows. Light monitors and lighting features became key elements of the design. A soothing color palette complements the space’s open layout, and both work together seamlessly to create a calm, hopeful space that promotes healing among UVA Health System’s patients.
